Behind the Freight Move: From the manufacturing line to your drive way

Auto manufacturing requires the synchronization of inbound shipments of parts and inputs with the outbound movement of finished vehicles. Before your new car can be parked in your drive way, the components required to build your new favorite ride have already covered many miles over the road, on the rails and even across the open ocean.

Go behind the scenes

Recently, SC Biz News profiled an international auto manufacturer’s entrance into North American manufacturing. Scheduled to begin production in 2018, Volvo Cars North America’s 1,600 acre, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located in South Carolina will be the home of global manufacturing for the S60 sedan. According to the company website, the facility will be capable of producing up to 100,000 cars per year.

To facilitate the end-to-end production, the facility will leverage technology including a conveyer belt to transport cars between each stage of assembly and over 300 robots to assist in the manufacturing. The facility will also feature a test-track and a marshaling yard, or staging point, with access to the CSX-network for transporting finished vehicles to a dealer near you. Volvo partnered with CSX’s industrial development experts and automotive team throughout the selection, vetting and facility design process, ensuring fluidity for inbound and outbound shipments across multiple modes of transportation, including carload, intermodal and port options. “Our commitment to service excellence starts well before the first shipment moves,” according to Carl Warren, director of industrial development. “We partnered with Volvo to design a rail solution to meet their long-term transportation and business needs.”

Choosing a transportation partner

In 2016, CSX partnered with auto manufactures to transport more than 5.4 million new and remarketed vehicles, delivering 15,200 carloads and 167,000 containers of just-in-time auto parts throughout North America. Customers choose CSX for unmatched market reach, commitment to service excellence and for the dedication and service product provided by the railroaders behind each and every freight move. “We run a very tight supply chain with our automotive partners, providing reliability and consistency in service throughout their sourcing and production network,” according to Maryclare Kenney, assistant vice president automotive. “From transporting parts to delivering finished automobiles, we partner with the world’s leading automotive manufacturers to keep production online and on time.”

The CSX network reaches nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population, including major consumptions markets throughout the Eastern U.S. The expansive reach of the network provides auto manufacturers access to ports, intermodal terminals and carload facilities to move parts, such as tires and bumpers, to finished automobiles destined for dealerships across the country.
