Working together to deliver improved service

Precision Scheduled Railroading consists of five key principles: Service Excellence, Controlling Costs, Optimizing Asset Utilization, Operating Safely, and Valuing and Developing Employees. These principles are the foundation for improving our operating plan and providing best-in-class service.

We have quickly made changes to improve service excellence, control costs and better utilize assets, in order to create a reliable and efficient service product. As recently shared at the Citi 2017 Industrials Conference, Precision Scheduled Railroading is delivering positive results on key operating service measures, including Velocity (+10%), Terminal Dwell (-7%), On-time Originations (+12%) and On-time Arrivals (+36%). Active train counts and merchandise handlings are down, providing better fluidity across the network.

Service and efficiency improvements

Below are key service measures recorded between February 27 (week 9) and June 6, 2017 (week 23).

Get to Know Key Service Measures

On-time Train Originations (OTO): Percent of successful departures for scheduled premium service trains at origin.

On-time Train Arrivals (OTA): Percent of successful arrivals for scheduled service trains at destination.

Terminal Dwell: Total time, in hours, that a car spends from arrival until departure at a yard/terminal.

Velocity: Average train speed between terminals in miles per hour (mph) excluding local, work, passenger and foreign trains.

The journey to deliver best-in-class service

We look forward to sharing more updates on our journey to become the best North American Railroad with a service product you can depend on to execute and grow your business.
