Behind the Freight Move: From the manufacturing line to your drive way

Auto manufacturing requires the synchronization of inbound shipments of parts and inputs with the outbound movement of finished vehicles. Before your new car can be parked in your drive way, the components required to build your new favorite ride have already covered many miles over the road, on the rails and even across the open ocean.

Choosing an automotive transportation partner

In 2016, CSX partnered with auto manufacturers to transport more than 5.4 million new and remarketed vehicles, delivering 15,200 carloads and 167,000 containers of just-in-time auto parts throughout North America. Customers choose CSX for unmatched market reach, commitment to service excellence and for the dedication and service product provided by the railroaders behind each and every freight move. “We run a very tight supply chain with our automotive partners, providing reliability and consistency in service throughout their sourcing and production network,” according to Maryclare Kenney, assistant vice president automotive. “From transporting parts to delivering finished automobiles, we partner with the world’s leading automotive manufacturers to keep production online and on time.”

The CSX network reaches nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population, including major consumptions markets throughout the Eastern U.S. The expansive reach of the network provides auto manufacturers access to ports, intermodal terminals and carload facilities to move parts, such as tires and bumpers, to finished automobiles destined for dealerships across the country.
