POLICY STATEMENT
CSX is committed to advancing environmental sustainability — as an employer, a business partner, a community member, an environmental steward, and a value creator for shareholders. We see sustainability as an essential business practice that goes beyond maintaining compliance and seeks to build a culture of safety, efficiency, and responsibility in a manner that protects CSX employees, communities, shareholders and the environment, now and in the future.
Our Environmental Policy (“the Policy”) outlines our approach and commitments related to minimizing our environmental impacts, engaging with stakeholders to advance our sustainability initiatives, working with partners and customers to innovate more sustainable transportation solutions and complying with all local, state and federal regulations.
SCOPE OF POLICY
This Policy applies across all levels and operations of CSX Corporation and its subsidiaries. We expect our employees, subsidiaries and contractors who perform services for, or on behalf of, CSX to comply with all applicable laws and regulations, to act in a way that is consistent with this Policy and to adopt similar policies for their own operations.
COMMITMENTS
CSX is committed to environmental compliance and strives to protect the environment and the safety and health of employees, customers and the public in all aspects of the company’s operations. The company’s decisions and actions are guided by the following commitments:
Robust Management System:
- Establish practices that comply with, promote, measure, and improve environmental sustainability across the business.
- Maintain an Environmental Management System that incorporates elements of ISO 14001 and American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care® management system.
- Review management system and compliance to ensure effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Regulatory Compliance, Risk Management & Continuity:
- Comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
- Identify, report and respond promptly to situations that could negatively impact the environment.
- Maintain business continuity and operating plans to maximize emergency response to security, operational, or weather events.
Resource Management and Conservation:
- Operate responsibly to conserve energy, fuel, water and material resources to reduce environmental impacts and drive progress on corporate sustainability targets.
- Minimize waste through recycling and reuse initiatives.
- Protect and conserve natural ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and implement best management practices to minimize environmental impacts.
- Implement best practices to ensure water discharge quality.
Stakeholder Support & Engagement:
- Conduct operations safely.
- Communicate with employees, customers, and stakeholders on environmental and sustainability issues, goals, and efforts.
- Disclose performance related to environmental initiatives, commitments, and goals to ensure transparency.
- Train and empower employees to fulfill environmental responsibilities and foster communication regarding environmental programs.
- Engage with suppliers to promote environmental stewardship in their operations and align with CSX environmental sustainability priorities and targets.
- Participate in public-private partnerships with communities, charities, and public agencies to advance environmental sustainability initiatives broadly.
Technology Improvements & Innovation:
- Explore and invest in technologies and processes that benefit operations and reduce environmental impacts.
- Collaborate with industry partners to develop solutions, technologies, and tools that improve operations and fuel efficiency.
- Support customer environmental and sustainability goals by providing efficient, innovative, and low-carbon transportation services.
