CSX's Robinson Creek, Ky., Tunnel Heavily Damaged by Fire

Released:  April 28, 2014

A fire late Saturday night engulfed most of a tunnel on the CSX Transportation line at Robinson Creek, Kentucky, cutting off service to two coal mines. The blaze, which burned for several hours, caused the tunnel’s ceiling to collapse. CSX Engineering crews will assess the tunnel for repairs as soon as possible, but no estimate is currently available on when the line will re-open.

The tunnel is located on a branch line serving two active coal mines. The branch line is on the SV&E Subdivision, and Robinson Creek is approximately 113 miles southeast of Lexington, Kentucky. The state fire marshal’s office and CSX personnel are investigating to determine the cause of the fire. There were no injuries.

Affected customers are being notified and alternative shipping arrangements discussed. CSX will provide further updates as additional information is available. Customers should contact CSX’s Coal Development office in Lexington with any specific questions.
