Expand a Rail-Served Facility

These are the steps to take to expand your existing operations.

  1. Contact the Site Design Manager in your area
The Site Design Manager for your area will coordinate your project within all departments at CSX. Early consultation with your Site Design Manager is crucial to ensure your track design will serve your rail logistics needs in a safe and effective manner. With more than 175 years of combined rail-design experience across all industry groups, your Site Design Manager can bring creative solutions to your rail needs.
  2. Review and approve construction drawings
Each project is reviewed by CSX’s Operating and Engineering departments to assure the level of service needed by the customer can be provided and that the design of the track meets CSX standards. Your Site Design Manager is the point of contact for these departments during the review and approval process.
  3. Side track agreement
The final step in the approval process is the execution of a new or revised Private Sidetrack Agreement (PSA). The PSA outlines the relationship between CSX and the industry and includes items such as the ownership, construction and maintenance of the tracks that CSX will operate on. If work is to be done on CSX right of way, this document also gives the industry the right to enter on to CSX property to perform the work.
  4. Building begins
Once the plans and operation have been approved and the sidetrack agreement executed, you can begin construction with the knowledge that the design meets all CSX requirements for a safe and efficient operation. During the course of construction, CSX field engineering personnel may make periodic visits to the project site to ensure the work is being performed according to CSX specifications. CSX field engineering will perform a final inspection of the completed work and, upon acceptance by CSX, the track will be placed in service. At this time you are able to ship to or from the new track.
