CCX Intermodal Terminal Earns AREMA Railroad Engineering Award

September 9, 2022 – CSX and the North Carolina Department of Transportation have won the 2022 Dr. William W. Hay Award for Engineering Excellence for their partnership on the Carolina Connector (CCX) Intermodal Terminal, one of the most technologically advanced intermodal terminals on the CSX system.

Presented annually by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), the Hay Award recognizes projects that advance railroad engineering through innovation, safety and service performance and reliability.

Opened in 2021 near Rocky Mount, North Carolina, CCX features three wide-span, zero-emission electric cranes with a lift capacity of 110,000 containers per year. Most of the container handling is fully automated with operators safely controlling the initial lift and final placement from inside the terminal building.

In addition to its remotely operated electric cranes, CCX maximizes safe and efficient truck movement through the facility with CSX’s XGate technology, which automates the in-gate process, streamlines traffic flows and automatically inspects loads leaving the facility.

The project was made possible through the collaborative partnership of CSX and North Carolina officials.

AREMA’s Hay Award is named after the late Dr. William W. Hay, a highly regarded railroad engineer and AREMA organization leader whose distinguished career included service in military transportation, private industry and as a professor of railway civil engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
