Hyundai Chooses CSX-served Alabama Plant for Electric Vehicle Expansion

April 26, 2022 – CSX is bringing the environmental advantages of rail to the first U.S. production of electric vehicles by Hyundai Motor Company, which announced it has chosen its Alabama manufacturing center for expansion into the EV market.

The company will enhance its Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama facility at Montgomery to produce the hybrid version of its Santa Fe sport utility vehicle along with the company’s first Electrified Genesis GV70 SUV. CSX is proud to be the rail service provider to the Hyundai site.

In a news release, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said Hyundai plans to invest $300 million in the expansion and create 200 jobs at the manufacturing center, which currently produces the Elantra sedan; Santa Fe and Tucson SUVs; and the Santa Cruz sport adventure vehicle.

Hyundai said it expects to begin production of the Santa Fe Hybrid in October and the Electrified GV70 in December.

“CSX is excited to partner with Hyundai as it expands into the electric vehicle market,” said Kevin Boone, executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. “We’re proud to provide safe, reliable and cost-effective rail service that enables Hyundai to incorporate the environmental advantages of rail into its supply chain.”
