CSX Trains Thousands of First Responders Through Community Safety Program
February 17, 2026 – In 2025, CSX reaffirmed its dedication to public safety through its Responder Incident Training (RIT) program, completing 75 training sessions and equipping 5,645 first responders with the skills and knowledge needed to handle railroad-related emergencies.
The RIT program provides first responders, emergency managers, and public safety officials with hands-on experience and critical insights into rail incident response. Training sessions focus on rail equipment familiarization, hazardous materials awareness, and coordinated emergency response, fostering stronger preparedness and collaboration at the local level.
“Safety is at the core of everything we do at CSX,” said Joe Taylor, director of Hazardous Materials at CSX. “Through the Responder Incident Training program, we’re proud to share our expertise and work alongside first responders to ensure they are well-prepared to protect their communities, our employees, and our network in the event of a rail emergency.”
A major enhancement to the program in 2025 was the introduction of a new training locomotive — a dedicated asset that provides first responders with realistic, hands-on learning opportunities. This specialized locomotive allows participants to train directly on rail equipment and engage in simulated emergency scenarios, offering a deeper understanding of locomotive systems and the challenges of incident response.
The addition of this advanced training tool marks a significant step forward in CSX’s safety initiatives, reinforcing the company’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement. By expanding the resources available through the RIT program, CSX is helping first responders build confidence and practical expertise before emergencies arise.
Responder Incident Training is a cornerstone of CSX’s broader community safety efforts, which prioritize collaboration, education, and proactive risk reduction. By working closely with first responders and public safety partners, CSX ensures coordinated and informed responses to rail-related incidents.
With nearly 100 training sessions completed and thousands of first responders trained in 2025, CSX continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to safety-first practices and supporting the communities it serves.
