January 8, 2026 – CSX has reached another significant milestone in its transformative Howard Street Tunnel project with the completion of final paving on the Guilford Avenue Bridge. This achievement marks a step forward for both the Baltimore community and CSX’s ongoing efforts to modernize freight rail infrastructure.
The Howard Street Tunnel project is a landmark initiative to expand the historic tunnel beneath downtown Baltimore, originally constructed in 1895. The primary goal of the project was to increase the tunnel’s vertical clearance, enabling double-stack intermodal trains to pass through and dramatically improving freight efficiency along the East Coast. In September 2025, CSX successfully completed the tunnel expansion, opening new opportunities for customers, the Port of Baltimore, and the entire region.
“Raising the bridge allowed us to avoid major disruptions and keep the project on track for the community and our customers,” said Brandon Knapp, Senior Director of Mid-Atlantic Construction for CSX.
With the tunnel expansion finished and the Guilford Avenue Bridge paving complete, CSX continues to demonstrate its commitment to operational excellence and community partnership. These improvements not only support more efficient rail service but also contribute to the economic vitality of Baltimore and the broader Mid-Atlantic region.
