September 1, 2026 – CSX is completing a major infrastructure upgrade at Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati that will help improve safety, efficiency, and reliability across one of the railroad's most active freight hubs.
The project adds 42 power-operated switches on the north end of the yard, increasing the total number of powered switches at Queensgate to approximately 170. The investment is part of CSX's ongoing commitment to modernizing its network and leveraging technology to support safer, more efficient operations.
Power-operated switches allow train routes to be set remotely, reducing the need for employees to manually line switches in the field. By minimizing the number of times conductors must get on and off locomotives, the technology helps reduce exposure to potential hazards while lowering the risk of run-through incidents.
"This is really about making the railroad safer, more efficient and more standardized," said Ryan Raymond, director of Hump Yard Operations, Engineering and Design. "Being able to work with the teams, keep them safe, and improve the operation is always going to be our highest priority."
The project has required close coordination among multiple operating teams while maintaining daily railyard activity. During construction, the new switches also create safer work zones by allowing train movements to be routed away from active project areas.
Queensgate Yard serves as a critical hub in the CSX network, and the upgrade is expected to further strengthen operational performance by improving the flow of rail traffic and supporting more consistent yard operations.
As the final switches are installed, the project represents another step in CSX's ongoing efforts to invest in infrastructure and technology that enhance safety while helping deliver reliable service for customers.
