CSX Honors Seaboard System Railroad Heritage with New Locomotive Paint Design

June 30, 2023 – CSX has unveiled a newly repainted locomotive honoring the Seaboard System Railroad, one of the heritage lines that merged to form the modern company. The locomotive has been repainted with a special hybrid design and renumbered CSX 1982 to commemorate a defining year in the birth of CSX.

CSX 1982 is the third in a series of heritage locomotives conceived by employees at the company’s Waycross Locomotive Shop in Georgia as a way of celebrating CSX’s rich history. The company previously unveiled units commemorating the B&O Railroad and the Chessie System.

For the Seaboard System locomotive, the Waycross team designed and executed a paint scheme that features modern CSX colors on the front cab portion of the unit and transitions to the heritage Seaboard System logo and gray, red and yellow colors on the portion that houses the locomotive’s power systems.

Al Varnadore, a CSX carman painter, commented on the satisfaction he felt from working on such a meaningful project, saying, "My granddaddy worked here when it was Seaboard Coast Line. So having the opportunity to work on this unit is like being a part of something that he was a part of."

Created in 1982 with the merger of the Seaboard Coast Line and the Louisville & Nashville railroads, the Seaboard System was the first step under the CSX Corporation holding company to combine all of the company’s heritage railroads into one.

CSX 1982 and other locomotives in the heritage series will be placed into revenue service and travel CSX’s 20,000 rail network, reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rail-based transportation services.
