Reminder for Hazardous Material Shippers

Released: May 27, 2010

Hazardous Material Shippers:

It is extremely important to provide proper shipping instructions, especially when tendering Hazardous Materials for shipment. You must provide a bill of lading that contains all required hazardous material shipping information and select the 49 series Hazardous Response Code that matches the shipping information.

Subpart C (Parts 172.200 through 172.205) of the U. S. Department of Transportation's Hazardous Material Regulations, 49 CFR, requires each person who offers a hazardous material for transportation shall describe the hazardous material on the shipping paper in the manner required by the regulations. This 49 number must be entered in the STCC field to generate a shipping document that displays the complete hazardous material shipping description as required by the U.S. DOT.

EDI 404/858 users should provide this information in the L5 segment and the corresponding LH Loops (LH1, LH2, & LH3) as well as the PER*HM segment with emergency contact information.
