Mainline in Northwest Indiana Blocked by Derailment

January 6, 2012 -- 8:00 p.m. -- At approximately 2:45 p.m. EST, CSX experienced a mainline derailment near Portage, Indiana, on the Garrett Subdivision. The derailment has blocked both main lines on the route between Chicago and Garrett, Indiana.

Work crews are mobilizing to make necessary repairs, but customers should expect between 24-36 hours of delay for traffic moving over this route. CSX is evaluating the situation to determine if traffic can be re-routed around the line blockage.

Trains moving between Chicago and Grand Rapids, Michigan, will not be impacted as the derailment is east of Porter, Indiana.
