Labor Negotiations Update

Released:  January 28, 2012

Since the railroads reached tentative agreements with 10 unions in December, eight of those unions have ratified their agreements by a wide margin.  We anticipate the remaining two – representing the dispatchers and signal workers – will also ratify.

Negotiations with the last remaining union -- the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWE) – continue, under the February 8 extension.  One reason these negotiations have taken longer is that the issues for the BMWE are different from railroad to railroad and each railroad has been negotiating with them on the issues specific to their concerns.

As of today, four of the six railroads – including CSX – have arrived at acceptable solutions, though no agreements have been signed as yet.  Early next week, representatives from all the railroads and the BMWE will meet with the National Mediation Board with a goal of reaching a complete tentative agreement.

We remain optimistic and will keep you posted on our progress.  Please check our customer site on CSX.com for updates or visit theNational Railway Labor Conference (NRLC) website at www.raillaborfacts.org for more insights on the continuing negotiations.
