Bridges

Where Service Meets Safety
Managing CSX’s Bridges

The CSX transportation network provides freight rail services to every major U.S. metropolitan area east of the Mississippi River and parts of Canada. Safe and durable bridges allow us to move millions of tons of goods each year, over roads, waterways and other rail lines. Bridges are critical to the operation of our business, and to the essential contribution we make to the smooth flow of commerce across North America.

There are more than 13,800 bridges on CSX’s transportation network, including 9,200 that carry trains and more than 4,600 that cross over our rights-of-way. Virtually no two bridges are the same and understanding these unique characteristics is critical to ensuring CSX bridges are safe and suitable for railroad operations. To manage these vital resources, CSX has strict and well-established policies and protocols for bridge inspection, maintenance and incident response.

To explain our approach, CSX publishes a Bridge Resource Guide (PDF) for reference by state and local officials and residents in the communities where we operate. The guide is intended to help readers understand how CSX inspects and maintain its bridges.

CSX is committed to maintaining its infrastructure – including our bridges – in ways that ensure the safety of the communities we serve, our employees and the freight we are entrusted to deliver. We also are committed to responding to community concerns with transparency.

In the event of an emergency involving a CSX bridge, please call the CSX Public Safety Communication Center at 1-800-232-0144.
