Steve Purvis is CSXT Nominee for Industry Environmental Award

Released: May 19, 2008

Jacksonville, Fla. - May, 19, 2008 - Georgia native Steve Purvis has been recognized by CSX Transportation (CSXT) as the company's 2008 nominee for railroading's highest environmental honor: the John H. Chafee Environmental Award. Steve's work as supervisory special agent for CSXT's specialized Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU) made him a clear choice for CSXT's nomination for the award, which is presented annually by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

"Steve Purvis is an excellent example of the environmental consciousness CSXT strives to achieve," said Ellen Fitzsimmons, CSX Corporation senior vice president for law and public affairs. "Not only has Steve's group set an impressive track record investigating and prosecuting crimes against the environment, they have also made huge strides building employee and shareholder confidence in environmental matters."

CSXT's Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU) investigates and prosecutes environmental crimes conducted on CSXT property. Since the ECU's inception, 300 incidents have been investigated. During this period there have been 14 arrests with a conviction record of 100 percent. Steve's efforts as ECU Coordinator have resulted in improved relations with environmental crime investigators at the local, state and federal levels, reduction of harm to human health and the environment and increased employee awareness about CSXT's environmental policies.

Over the years, Steve has received numerous company awards for his thorough, innovative, and successful police investigations that have resulted in risk reduction, a safer railroad, and a high number of arrests. In addition, he received a heroism award for saving people from a potential drowning.

The AAR's Chafee Award is named for former U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee's (R-RI) late father, who as a leading environmentalist understood and promoted the environmental advantages of rail transportation. The award, given each year by the AAR, recognizes a single railroad employee who has demonstrated outstanding environmental performance in the area of environmental awareness and responsibility.
