August 26, 2011, 3:45 p.m. update -- As part of its broad-based efforts to help ensure the safety of employees and the public while protecting rail infrastructure, CSX is curtailing local train service along coastal North Carolina and Virginia and temporarily suspending activities at some of its intermodal and transload terminals.  The company also is assessing needs in other areas that could potentially be impacted.

Actions include coordination with passenger and commuter agencies, and the relocation of locomotives and rail cars in the projected path. As part of its post-storm recovery, plans are in place to inspect infrastructure and facilities, and to make any necessary repairs.

The company continues to coordinate with customers on potential impacts to their facilities and on temporary changes, as required, in pickup and delivery schedules. CSX Police officers are on standby for response to affected areas, and occupational health personnel are prepared with emergency medical supplies.

CSX has made a $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross in advance of the storm’s landfall to use where the greatest need exists or in future storms.

“The employees of CSX are hard at work preparing our transportation network for Irene,” said Michael J. Ward, chairman, president and chief executive officer. “At the same time, they wish to offer a hand to our communities through the vital efforts of the Red Cross.”
