Freight Rail Industry Reduces Road Delays, Improves Safety and Helps Protect the Environment

Jacksonville, Fla. - May 20, 2009 - This Memorial Day weekend, more than 27 million drivers will crowd American highways, enticed by a predicted 40% drop in gas prices from 2008. As holiday travelers mark the traditional start of summer they will likely encounter congested highways and construction delays. Most travelers are unaware of the role played by freight rail companies such as CSX Transportation (CSXT) in reducing congestion, improving safety on the roads and decreasing air pollution.

"One train can carry the load of more than 280 trucks, freeing room for approximately 1,100 passenger cars," said Tony L. Ingram, executive vice president and chief operating officer, CSXT. "As Americans hit the road this holiday weekend, the freight rail industry is doing our part to ease the congestion that Americans will face on the highways."

Memorial Day marks the beginning of the most dangerous season for car accidents. According to the USDOT, highway travel contributed to more than 41,000 fatalities in 2007. Easing highway congestion reduces the likelihood of accidents by taking vehicles off the road and decreasing time spent behind the wheel.

Another benefit of rail is cleaner air. At the beach or the pool this weekend, CSXT delivers clearer skies. Moving freight by rail is three times more fuel-efficient than moving freight on the highway. In fact, trains can move a ton of freight more than 436 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Every train that CSXT runs helps keep our air cleaner.

Since 1980 the railroad industry has invested more than $1 billion to upgrade its fleet with more efficient, Tier II clean air locomotives and improved locomotive fuel efficiency by over 80%. By 2009, an additional 1,200 CSX locomotives will be upgraded to further reduce emissions and lower fuel consumption by nearly 10 million gallons. CSXT has a long standing commitment to air quality and clean operations.
