Second Year CSX Ranks Highest Among Freight Rail Industry

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – October 21, 2010 – CSX Corporation (CSX) today announced that for the second year in a row, the company is ranked highest among all Class I freight railroads in Newsweek’s 2010 Green Ranking of the 500 largest U.S. companies. The company is ranked tenth among all transport and aerospace companies and 215 overall.

CSX’s rank is based on a data-driven assessment of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in America, as measured by revenue, market capitalization, and number of employees. Three leading environmental organizations quantified the companies’ environmental footprints and policies, as well as a measure of reputation based on a poll of Chief Executive Officers, environmental officers, and other green experts.

The environmental benefits of rail are significant, and CSX’s operations are designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Moving freight by rail is three times more fuel-efficient than transporting freight on the highway. Trains can move a ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel, and one freight train can move the goods of more than 280 trucks.
 
CSX has a longstanding commitment to air quality and clean operations. The company was the first transportation company to voluntarily set a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. CSX committed to reducing its carbon dioxide intensity eight percent by 2011. As part of this effort, CSX has deployed significant numbers of fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly “GenSet” locomotives in rail yards across its network. Over the last decade, CSX has invested more than $1.5 billion to upgrade its locomotive fleet with technology that reduces fuel consumption and air emissions. Through these efforts, the company has improved its fuel efficiency by more than 90 percent since 1980.

Additionally, the company recognizes the importance of a green supply chain and works closely with its customers to make their supply chains as efficient as possible.
