Association of American Railroads Honors CSX Employee with Top Environmental Award

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (April 24, 2019) – For the sixth time in seven years, a CSX employee has won the Association of American Railroads’ John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award for their dedication to improving environmental performance. The annual award recognizes railroad employees for outstanding environmental awareness and responsibility.

CSX Director of Operations Planning Gary Van Tassel was presented with this year’s award for his leadership in innovating terminal modifications to improve efficiency and lessen environmental impacts.

Van Tassel, who has been with CSX for nine years, leads initiatives to modernize intermodal terminal layouts to reduce operating footprint, infrastructure and equipment, and automate terminal gate inspections through the implementation of custom technology. The environmental impacts of these changes have been significant: the modernized terminals require 20 percent smaller footprints, 47 percent fewer wheeled parking spaces, 85 percent fewer trucks and 42 percent fewer cranes. The automated terminal gate solution – called XGate – has nearly eliminated driver wait times, reducing emissions by thousands of tons each year when compared to a traditionally managed terminal.

“CSX is committed to being an environmentally responsible operator,” said Jamie Boychuk, senior vice president of network operations at CSX. “Gary’s innovative use of technology and his efforts to make our terminals lean and efficient are a clear demonstration of this commitment and we are proud to have Gary on our team.”

The Chafee Environmental Excellence Award is an annual recognition named after the late Rhode Island senator, who was a strong advocate of environmental efforts.
