CSX Marks Milestone in Blue Ridge Subdivision Restoration with Poplar Bridge Rebuild

June 12, 2025 – CSX has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to restore the Blue Ridge Subdivision, less than nine months after Hurricane Helene devastated 60 miles of the vital rail line. Seven new spans of the Poplar Bridge across the Nolichucky River are now in place, a critical step in rebuilding the line that handles approximately 14 million gross tons of freight annually. With the bridge now ready for track to be laid, the restoration of this key transportation corridor continues to progress efficiently.

“The new Poplar Bridge features a ballast deck, which improves under-clearance and enhances its survivability in future severe weather,” said Jacob Metcalf, CSX assistant chief engineer of bridges. “This structure is built to be stronger and more resilient.”

The comprehensive restoration effort has been a collaborative venture, with CSX partnering closely with state and federal agencies as well as local communities. CSX has emphasized sustainability throughout the project, recovering and reusing four of the bridge’s original 95-foot spans. The company has also worked to minimize environmental impacts along the Blue Ridge Subdivision.

Nabil Hamadani, a contract engineer with HDR who has been closely involved with the project said the recovery of the Blue Ridge line highlights the strength of the human spirit. “The Blue Ridge line is an integral part of this region, and its recovery is a testament to the dedication of both the CSX team and the surrounding communities. Rebuilding this railroad is about supporting the broader recovery of the region,” he said.

CSX’s restoration project has benefitted from the expertise of a highly skilled team of engineers and environmental specialists, along with countless hours contributed by contractors and employees. Metcalf praised the collaborative effort, calling it a hallmark of the company’s ONE CSX culture.

“I want to thank all the CSX teams and our contractors for their countless hours of hard work and dedication to this recovery effort,” Metcalf said. “This project has truly been a ONE CSX effort.”
