A Day in the Life: Inside a CSX Hi-Rail Track Inspection
April 10, 2026 — Trains operate around the clock across the CSX network, driven by customer demand and dynamic operating conditions. Behind the scenes, a continuous cycle of track inspections ensures the railroad remains safe and reliable for every train that travels its rails.
One of the most essential tools in this effort is the hi-rail vehicle — a specialized truck equipped with retractable steel wheels that allow it to operate directly on railroad tracks. These vehicles provide track inspectors with safe and efficient access to mainline and other-than-main tracks, enabling them to evaluate rail conditions, right-of-way concerns, public crossings, and signal-related infrastructure.
“Safety drives every decision we make on the track,” said Kyler Denison, track supervisor in the CSX Florida Division. “That means following operating rules, staying situationally aware, and looking out for the people you’re working with so we can all go home to our families each and every night.”
Operating a hi-rail vehicle requires strict adherence to safety protocols, operating rules, and a deep understanding of the physical characteristics of the territory. This versatility is critical to keeping CSX’s network running smoothly and ensuring the safe movement of trains mile after mile, day after day.
While much of this work happens behind the scenes, hi-rail inspections are a cornerstone of CSX’s commitment to safety and reliability. Thanks to the dedication of track inspection teams and the innovative tools they use, CSX continues to deliver dependable service to its customers and communities.
