CSX Family Days Celebrate America's Best Railroaders

November 15, 2022 – From Baltimore to Birmingham and Walbridge to Waycross, more than 3,000 CSX railroaders and family members turned out for six CSX Family Day events in August through October.

Each location featured its own combination of activities in a carnival atmosphere of food, fun, giveaways, entertainment and a chance for families to see the railroad up close. Most of all, there was the pride and camaraderie of being part of ONE CSX.

“Every location on our network has its own personality, but what you find when you travel our railroad and meet the people who make it run is that everyone shares the pride of doing a job that is vital to America,” said Jamie Boychuk, executive vice president of Operations, who attended many of the Family Day events.”

As their name indicated, much of the focus of CSX Family Days was on railroaders’ families and the support they give the husbands, wives, dads and moms who do the demanding work required to keep America moving. Children enjoyed carnival rides, petting zoos and many other festive activities, while family members of all ages toured terminals on observation cars, sat in a locomotive cab and took turns on a locomotive trainer console.

Brandon Melady, a senior track supervisor who brought his family to the Avon, Indiana, event, said, “It’s been an absolutely fantastic day. We enjoyed a train ride, horses, free food, and free drinks. We really appreciate CSX for putting this on.”

Although the Transportation Department took the lead in organizing the Family Days, all Operations teams (Engineering, Mechanical, Safety and Facilities employees and their families) were equally well represented at each location — and that was another important aspect of the events. Employees from CSX headquarters in Jacksonville also attended to lend support.

“CSX has a lot of different crafts that make the railroad run, and it’s good to bring everybody together and let them have a day for themselves,” said Morgan Yarbrough, superintendent at Selkirk, N.Y. “People have been very grateful. They’re very excited to see this type of stuff come back to the railroad here.”

More CSX Family Days are being planned for 2023, as the spirit of the ONE CSX culture continues to grow as the driving force behind America’s best-run railroad.
