Removal of Excavated Soil from Second Staging Area Begins, Environmental Monitoring Continues in Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – August 4, 2015 – CSX continues to monitor the area surrounding the site of the July 1 derailment in coordination with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Water Resources Division (TDEC) under the Tennessee Division of Remediation Voluntary Oversight and Assistance Program.

CSX completed removal of the excavated soils at the Armona Road staging area last Friday.  Yesterday, CSX began loading the excavated soils at its other staging area on Old Mt. Tabor Road.  Removal of all soils is expected to be completed next week. Appropriate air monitoring is in place and will continue until all loading is complete. The soils will be disposed of in compliance with environmental regulations in a permitted hazardous waste facility.

CSX continues to monitor surface and ground water on a routine basis in coordination with TDEC.  CSX has installed 25 monitoring wells surrounding the derailment site and will continue collecting and analyzing data from these sampling points.  The well water advisory remains in effect as a precautionary measure as sampling continues.

CSX will continue weekly public updates to keep the community informed on monitoring results and progress. We remain in close contact with the City of Maryville and Blount County and appreciate their continued coordination as we work through restoration activities.

Community members who have been affected by the derailment can request an application for compensation by calling 1-877-TELLCSX (1-877-835-5279) or downloading an application at the following link: http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/about-csx/contact-us/blount-county-compensation-process/

CSX representatives will be available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer calls and assist community members until all needs are met.
