CSX Safely Removes Remaining Derailed Cars from James River, May 3, 2014

CSX continued efforts overnight and into the day on Saturday, May 3, to restore the site affected by a freight-train derailment that occurred April 30 in Lynchburg, Va. The final two cars that had entered the James River have been safely recovered and positioned for removal from the site, in coordination with onsite safety, investigative and first-responder organizations.

CSX is continuing site reconditioning efforts including removing debris, rebuilding the road bed and completing preliminary work to re-lay track in order to restore service. CSX also is working closely with safety officials to secure the site and allow affected businesses to resume operations as soon as possible.

In coordination with federal, state and local environmental authorities, CSX also is continuing its comprehensive environmental assessment and protection effort. Anyone who needs information or assistance related to the derailment can contact 1-877-TELL CSX (1-877-835-5279) or the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health (434-442-4642) for any health or environmental related concerns.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the cause of the derailment on-scene. CSX is cooperating in this investigation.
