JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – September 23, 2019 – CSX (NASDAQ: CSX) is committed to safety, and this week we are partnering with Operation Lifesaver (OLI), the Federal Railroad Administration, other Class 1 railroads, Amtrak, commuter rail-service providers and law enforcement agencies to encourage safe behavior around railroad tracks and trains. CSX is working to reduce the number of grade crossing and trespass incidents in communities across its 23 state network by participating in public events, giving safety presentations and through social media messages all week.
“Distracted driving and walking are top public safety issues across the country, especially when approaching railroad crossings,” said Sean Douris, chief of police for CSX. “Our goal is zero accidents – one incident involving a vehicle or pedestrian is too many. We believe education is one of the best tools to prevent these types of accidents, and we are committed to reaching as many people as possible with the information they need to keep themselves safe.”
While the number of annual vehicle collisions has dropped 83 percent in the past four decades, about every three hours somewhere in the U.S., a person or vehicle is struck by a train, according to OLI, a national educational organization dedicated to rail-safety awareness since 1972.
The goal of Rail Safety Week is to reduce these types of incidents and save lives by raising awareness about how to safely cross railroad tracks. Throughout the week, CSX representatives will join in this national initiative and focus on directly reaching drivers, pedestrians and rail passengers with important rail-safety tips.
“The safety of our employees and communities where we operate is CSX’s highest priority, so we are proud to participate in Rail Safety Week,” said Douris. “Tuesday’s Operation Clear Track initiative is the largest enforcement blitz in the country. Working together to share life-saving information with our communities, we will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on rail safety in our country.”
CSX has developed a comprehensive Rail Safety Week plan designed to reach people of all ages and amplify rail safety. The plan includes:
