Baltimore youth media organization helps CSX promote rail safety
Safety is a top priority at CSX – but did you know that sometimes CSX partners with students to share that message?
Since the summer of 2014, Wide Angle Youth Media has helped write, produce and edit six safety-focused videos for CSX. The videos, made by students, for students, talk about safety using innovative, catchy narratives. These kids understand the audience because they are a part of it, and they take CSX’s “safety is a way of life” mentality seriously.
Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Wide Angle Youth Media is a nonprofit that encourages the city’s youth to engage with traditional and new media to cross generational, cultural and social divides. Members of the program develop new skills while earning valuable work experiences that carry on to school and, eventually, their careers.
"CSX has been an amazing partner for Wide Angle Youth Media because they value young people's voices and experiences”, says David Sloan, Production Director at Wide Angle Youth Media. “They have made a long-term investment in our organization, giving our producers an opportunity to make safety messages by youth for youth. In addition, CSX has entrusted our youth producers with real responsibility. When our students make an effective safety campaign, they help CSX save lives."
Today, CSX and Wide Angle Youth Media are currently in the development process of two more videos, both of which address rail-crossing awareness.
Their latest video, Don’t Ignore Your Safety, addresses the issue of pedestrians wearing headphones around the track.
