CSX is a proponent of the use of former rail corridors for recreational trails under the Federal Surface Transportation Board’s (STB) Notice of Interim Trail Use condition (NITU), i.e. railbanking. CSX has had much success in conveying former rail corridors for conversion to recreational trail use throughout the eastern United States.
Under the National Trails System Act, 16 U.S.C. 1247(d), the STB is given an administrative role in assisting rail carriers who wish to railbank corridors as an alternative to a complete abandonment of the line, thus preserving the rail corridor for possible future use.
The STB’s website is a great resource for public information on the NITU program. Learn more at https://prod.stb.gov/news-communications/latest-news/pr-19-19/.
