CSX secured federal approval to dispatch, operate and maintain the line known as the Elsdon Subdivision between Munster, Ind., and Chicago, Ill. CSX has operated in Chicago and the south/southwest suburbs since its creation in 1981 — and with predecessor railroads much longer. The trains on the Elsdon line will be dispatched locally from the south suburbs of Chicago. Operating on the Elsdon subdivision will reduce freight train congestion in the region by an estimated 20 hours per day. This means fewer idling trains and better service to the consuming public. CSX will generally not operate additional train traffic during morning and evening rush hours, and is working closely with local communities to minimize any impact of additional trains. In addition, CSX will maintain quiet zone status on the line where it presently exists (portions of Chicago, Blue Island and all of Evergreen Park).
