“According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, in addition to their own employees, freight railroads sustain more than 1 million jobs across related and support industries.”
- The American Association of Railroads
Most products in your everyday life traveled on a freight train – from food and clothing to construction materials and vehicles. Freight railroads, including CSX, support economic growth and job development while reducing the transportation industry’s environmental impact.
CSX provides safe, reliable freight transportation services that support economic growth and provide the goods that consumers need every day. In 2015, CSX moved more than 6.7 million units of freight and delivered strong earnings for shareholders, despite losses in one of its most significant markets – coal. CSX’s financial results are continued evidence that its core strategy, investment for the future and commitment to customerscan create sustainable value for shareholders.
In 2015, CSX also achieved the company’s first sub-70 full-year operating ratio at 69.7 percent, a testament to the increasing efficiency of business operations. The company delivered a total cost reduction of nearly $375 million, which includes both efficiency initiatives and savings from right-sizing resources to match demand.
Along with creating value for our shareholders, CSX creates and sustains jobs, builds new facilities, and grows and expands business across the network. In 2015, CSX worked with customers on 107 projects to build or expand facilities on its network and short-line partners. Since 2000, CSX customers have created more than 62,000 jobs across the company’s network. CSX contributes to the economic health and sustainability of the communities across the network by providing wages and benefits to employees and retirees, paying taxes at the local, state, and federal level, and helping to grow commerce and attract more local business.
CSX also works with its suppliers to match the diversity of the communities we serve. As a part of our role in advocating for sustainability up and down the global transportation supply chain, CSX increased the number of its suppliers completing the CDP Supply Chain Survey to 64 of the largest suppliers in 2015.
