More and more businesses are turning to rail, which offers a cost-effective and highly efficient alternative to trucking and transport freight. CSX ensures that its locomotive technology is not only cost-effective and highly efficient, but also environmentally-friendly.
Trains can move a ton of freight over 470 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Efficient use of fuel means less greenhouse gases or carbon emissions for our planet.
CSX’s emissions-reduction goal is just one part of the company’s environmental stewardship plan, designed to continuously reduce the environmental footprint of freight transportation in the nation.
In 2012, CSX announced its second generation goal to reduce greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions intensity 6-8% by 2020, helping to limit the environmental footprint of freight operations in America. The company previously achieved its first goal to reduce GHG emissions intensity by 8% a year ahead of target, in 2010.
CSX’s emissions reduction goal is just one part of the company’s environmental stewardship, an effort that helps the nation’s freight transportation system run as efficiently as possible.
The EPA estimates that moving freight by rail, instead of highway transportation, lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent. Shifting 10% of long-haul freight from the highway to rail would reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 18 million tons. Railroads are the most environmentally friendly way to move freight across land.
To help inform our customers of the most environmentally friendly way to move goods, CSX created an online Carbon Calculator to calculate the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions savings of specific rail shipments, and provide comparative data among transportation choices.
