Investment Projects

National Gateway

  • The National Gateway is an approximately $850 million, multi-state, public-private infrastructure project to improve the flow of freight between the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest by clearing key freight corridors for double-stack rail service. The National Gateway has received considerable state and federal funding, and CSX is investing approximately $575 million in the project.
  • The first phase of the National Gateway, which clears the way for double-stack intermodal service between CSX’s existing terminal in Chambersburg, Pa., and its state-of-the-art hub facility in Northwest Ohio, was completed on time and on budget in September 2013. The project is currently in its second phase, which will double-stack clear the CSX corridor between Chambersburg and mid-Atlantic ports.

Carolina Connector Intermodal Rail Terminal (CCX)

  • In July 2016, the state of North Carolina, the Carolinas Gateway Partnership and CSX proudly announced Rocky Mount, North Carolina, as the home for a new intermodal rail terminal known as the Carolina Connector, or CCX. This $270M+ critical infrastructure project will serve as a major transportation hub in the Southeast, and a catalyst for substantial economic growth throughout the state of North Carolina. CSX and the North Carolina Community

  • In partnership with state and local economic development agencies, North Carolina businesses invested more than $32 million in new or expanded rail-served facilities on CSX or its connecting regional and short lines in 2015. These investments will generate 120 new jobs at those businesses.
  • CSX has designated the Washburn Switch Business Park in Cleveland County, Kingsboro Industrial Sites in Rocky Mount, and the Mid-Atlantic Industrial Rail Park in Leland as “Select Sites,” rail-served, ready-to-build locations for industrial development and expansion. The “Select Site” program is part of CSX’s network-wide economic development initiative.
  • In 2015, CSX contributed nearly $105,000 to organizations in North Carolina, including North Carolina Operation Lifesaver, Pembroke Rescue Squad Inc., Shelter Health Services, Marbles Kids Museum, and United Way of Richmond County.
