MARYVILLE, Tenn. – August 25, 2015 – CSX continues to monitor the area surrounding the site of the July 1 derailment in coordination with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Water Resources Division (TDEC) under the Tennessee Division of Remediation Voluntary Oversight and Assistance Program. Monitoring efforts will continue on a regular, long-term basis.  CSX remains in close contact with the City of Maryville and Blount County.  Going forward, public updates will be provided if conditions change.

Around midnight on July 1, a CSX train en route from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Waycross, Ga., derailed a tank car carrying acrylonitrile, a flammable liquid used in a variety of industrial processes including the manufacture of plastics. First responders ordered an evacuation for residents within a two-mile radius of the derailment site.  

CSX provided lodging for displaced residents and established a community outreach center to meet the needs of residents and businesses and hotlines to further address questions and health-related concerns. The investigation into the derailment continues in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration.

CSX and TDEC began environmental monitoring of air, soil, surface water and ground water including residential wells and installed 25 monitoring wells surrounding the derailment site.  A well water advisory was placed in effect as a precautionary measure and residents in the immediate vicinity of the site were transferred to municipal water.

Recovery and restoration efforts included excavating soils affected by the released product and backfilling the area with clean soil.  CSX completed the transport of all excavated soils to a permitted hazardous waste facility for disposal in compliance with environmental regulations.
