Increase in Number, Length and Speed of Trains on CSX Tracks from Seymour to Butlerville, Indiana

SEYMOUR, Ind. – August 22, 2016 – Beginning as soon as September 7, 2016, CSX will transport more, longer trains at faster speeds along its tracks between Seymour and Butlerville, Indiana. These changes will enhance capacity and efficiency along the corridor, improving connectivity for manufacturers, farmers, marine ports and other contributors to the area’s economic growth.

CSX Transportation (CSXT) train speeds will increase from the current speed limit of 25 mph to a maximum of 40 mph at many locations. Track and signal improvements have been made to allow for the safe increase in train speeds in accordance with federal regulations. The number and average length of CSXT trains will also increase and will vary depending on rail freight volumes.

These operational changes compliment recently announced CSX adjustments on the Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC), which include additional trains at higher speeds along the LIRC between Louisville and Seymour.

Twenty-four (24) public and private highway-rail at-grade crossings are impacted by these changes, including O’Brien Street in Seymour, S. County Road 700 W. and S. County Road 610 W. in Jennings County, Brownstead Road and N. Madison Ave. in North Vernon, N. County Road 175 E. and N. County Road 275 E. in Jennings County, along with Main Street in Butlerville.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to always obey railroad crossing signals and warnings and to use caution when approaching all highway-rail grade crossings. A train can come at any time, so “stop, look and listen” before proceeding through an open crossing.

Operation Lifesaver, a nationwide public education program to promote awareness of safe behavior at highway-rail crossings, is available for safety presentations to community groups, school children, bus and truck drivers and others who live or travel near train tracks. To schedule a presentation, contact your local Operation Lifesaver state coordinator in Indiana at www.inol.org.
