Environmental Monitoring Continues, Removal of Excavated Soil from Staging Area Begins in Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – July 28, 2015 – CSX continues to monitor the area surrounding the site of the July 1 derailment in coordination with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Water Resources Division (TDEC) under the Tennessee Division of Remediation Voluntary Oversight and Assistance Program.

Surface water results continue to show no detections of acrylonitrile at any sampling points.  TDEC has approved a routine schedule for future surface water monitoring in the area.  Ground water monitoring results continue to show no product detections in any residential wells other than the onsite well previously discussed.  CSX has installed 25 monitoring wells around the derailment site and will continue to aggressively monitor the area in coordination with TDEC.

CSX began loading the excavated soils at the Armona Road staging area into rail cars today.  Appropriate air monitoring is in place and will continue until all loading is complete. CSX expects to complete removal activities at Armona Road by the end of the week.  CSX will begin removing the excavated soils at its other staging area on Old Tabor Road next week.

CSX will continue weekly public updates to keep the community informed on monitoring results and progress. We remain in close contact with the City of Maryville and Blount County and appreciate their continued coordination as we work through restoration activities.

Community members who have been affected by the derailment can request an application for compensation by calling 1-877-TELLCSX (1-877-835-5279) or downloading an application at the following link: http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/about-csx/contact-us/blount-county-compensation-process/
