CSX Operational & Community Update – Train Service Restored; Outreach Center Open Until 8:00 p.m.

August 12, 2016

CSX teams have restored the tracks at the site of Wednesday’s train derailment in Falmouth, Ky., and normal train operations are expected to resume later today.

All 24 railcars involved in the derailment have been safely moved away from the tracks or have been rerailed for removal. Crews continue cleaning up areas near the tracks and preparing the derailed cars to be transported safely to another location.

The grade crossing at Woodson Road in Falmouth will remain closed until crossing gates and signals are reinstalled today. Once signals are reinstalled, the crossing will be re-opened to vehicle traffic.

The ongoing cleanup will be closely coordinated with federal, state and local safety and environmental officials, including the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

CSX appreciates the support of these agencies throughout the past few days – particularly Falmouth and Pendleton County firefighters, police, paramedics, and public officials – and we thank residents for their patience as we work to safely restore the community as quickly as possible.

As a precaution, air-quality monitoring will continue today near the tracks and at the staging area while derailed railcars are prepared for disposal. No air quality issues have been identified since monitoring began Wednesday.

Today is the final day that the CSX Community Outreach Center will be open at the Pendleton County High School Auditorium Lobby. It will close at 8:00 tonight. CSX will reimburse residents for out-of-pocket expenses, lost wages and business interruption losses related to the derailment.  Affected residents are asked to bring purchase receipts and any other supporting documentation as well as government-issued identification and proof of residency, such as a utility bill.

Beginning tomorrow, impacted residents may request applications for compensation from the following address:

CSX Transportation
Attention: Cindy Beggs – 14th floor J150
500 Water Street
Jacksonville, FL 32202

Upon receipt of a request, CSX will send back a package with the application, a form for itemizing damages, and instructions on how to provide supporting documentation. This compensation process takes approximately 4-6 weeks.

Anyone with questions is also invited to call the CSX community affairs contact center at 1-877-TellCSX (1-877-835-5279).

The CSX train was transporting 76 loaded cars and 49 empty cars from Cincinnati, Ohio to Atlanta, Georgia Wednesday when 24 cars derailed around 10:40 a.m. No hazardous materials leaked. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

This is the final update that will be issued regarding this incident.
