Fortune 500 Recognition Underscores Importance of CSX to the U.S. Economy

May 29, 2018 – Being named to the Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. companies is about much more than financial performance. Although total revenue is the measure by which the ranking is compiled, appearing on the Fortune 500 list reinforces a company's position as an engine of the American economy and the important work being performed by its employees.

That's why all CSX employees can take pride in the company's appearance at No. 265 on the newly released Fortune 500 list for 2018. A Fortune 500 company since the inception of the list in its current form, the recognition this year includes an online article on the Fortune.com website about our company and the scheduled railroading transformation.

By meeting the challenges of sweeping change throughout the past year, CSX employees enabled the company to achieve record financial performance in 2017. Revenue increased 3 percent, adjusted earnings per share were up 27 percent, and operating costs as a percentage of revenue — the rail industry's leading measure of efficiency — improved to 67.9 percent. In the first quarter of 2018, the operating ratio dropped even further, to 63.7 percent, en route to a goal of 60 percent by 2020.

From trackside to headquarters, CSX employees are strengthening the company brand through their commitment to serving customers and making CSX the best railroad in North America.
