CSX Hosts First Responder Training at Fulton Yard in Richmond, Va.

April 13, 2018 – CSX is committed to the safe and efficient transportation of freight through the communities we serve. As a part of our dedication to safety, CSX trains its employees and community partners throughout the year using both interactive instruction and classroom training.

From April 9-13, 2018, CSX partnered with The Chlorine Institute to train first responders at the CSX Fulton Rail Yard in Richmond, Va. The multi-day training provided first responders from a variety of agencies including the Henrico County Division of Fire and Richmond Fire Department a hands-on training experience covering railroad operations, safety rules, hazmat and emergency response procedures. During the training attendees participated in classroom discussions, field-based exercises using rail cars and completed practice drills.

First responders learned about the physical and chemical properties of chemicals transported by rail and how to safely respond to railroad incidents involving such materials. In addition, attendees learned about required PPE and safety procedures while working on railroad property, devices used to fix leaking rail cars, and how to communicate with the railroad.

Additional trainings across the network are scheduled throughout the year. According to Michael Austin, director-hazardous materials/special agent, “The training in Richmond is a great example of the partnership between CSX and local communities. The team at CSX is dedicated to working with local first responders to deliver safety training and instruction to partners across our network. This type of collaboration between CSX, customers, and local communities enhances our ability to move freight safely and efficiently across the U.S.”
