Safety Performance

Safety is a top priority at CSX. It's a core value, and it affects every decision the company makes.

Having achieved a 44% improvement in the FRA personal injury frequency index and a 40% improvement in the FRA train accident rate over the past five years, CSX is a recognized safety leader in an industry that the U.S. Department of Labor ranks as one of the safest in the country.

Employee Safety
CSX employees are dedicated to absolute compliance with safety and operating rules. Through comprehensive training programs and state-of-the-art facilities, employees gain the knowledge and skills to work safely and move customers’ freight reliably.

Employee safety programs focus on:

  • Compliance with operating and safety rules.
  • Correct and consistent use of all tools, personal protective equipment (such as hard hats, safety glasses and safety shoes) and established job procedures.
  • Proper reporting of all accidents and injuries as required by company policy and federal law.
  • Understanding and reacting to changes in the work environment which affect one's awareness.
  • Mutual accountability

Community Safety
The CSX commitment to safety extends beyond its employees and facilities, into the communities served by the rail network:

  • Operation Lifesaver
  • Common Sense
  • Beyond Our Rails

Hazardous Material
Rail is the safest way to transport goods over land. For every billion ton-miles of hazardous materials transported, trucks are involved in more than 16 times as many accidents as railroads.

Track Maintenance
Maintenance of the railroad infrastructure is essential for reaching the goal of zero accidents and injuries. CSX spends more than $1 billion annually on improving and maintaining track, bridges, signal systems, equipment and operations.

Emergency Response
In the communities the company serves, CSX provides emergency planning assistance and training to local fire, police and emergency response personnel. The company has developed a customized training program for two groups: emergency responders and law enforcement personnel.
