Message From Our Chairman

Every day, my 30,000 colleagues and I have the privilege of doing something that is vitally important to the nation — moving America’s freight on steel wheels and steel rails.

What’s gratifying about this business is not just that we’ve been doing it for more than 180 years — although that is pretty special. It’s that right now, CSX is providing more transportation solutions and creating more value for customers and shareholders than at any time in our storied history.

Our transportation network plays a central role in the world’s most productive, environmentally friendly and cost-effective freight rail system.

CSX creates powerful competitive advantages for American business, moving products to build and power homes and businesses, grain to feed livestock and poultry, military equipment to protect our homeland and consumer goods that enhance the quality of American life.

Today, we move those goods on trains that can pull a ton of freight almost 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Each train can carry the load of 280 trucks.

That’s good for the environment. Good for travelers who want more space on the highways. Good for the economy.

We are stimulating the economy with substantial job-producing infrastructure investments — $8.3 billion in the past five years alone. Our shareholders know that those investments let CSX create real and significant value in the near term and long term.

In fact, a $1,000 investment in CSX five years ago would leave you with $2,700 today — a return of approximately 170 percent. That same $1,000 invested in the S&P 500® index five years ago would have returned just 1 percent. We believe there’s more value where that came from.

Why?

The economy is growing again, and more goods need to be moved. The population is on the rise, and more people will consume more things that travel by rail. And global trade creates even more demand for rail — a key artery between American businesses and the country’s bustling ports.

Underlying all of this real and potential growth is a CSX workforce that is relentless in its focus on safety, service and operational excellence. Our people hold themselves and each other accountable for results and have delivered them over and over again.

We’re bringing thousands of new employees onto our railroad — a place where they can make a tangible contribution to society while earning top-notch pay, benefits and pensions.

Those same employees are volunteering thousands of hours each year to give back to the communities we serve.

Our goal is to plant 21,000 trees — one for each mile on our transportation network — while also providing better physical environments for schoolchildren.

Most people reading this Corporate Profile and Responsibility Report have in some way contributed to the rich history of our railroad and its readiness for the future.

The purpose of this document is to give you a thorough and transparent view of CSX — who we are, what we do, where we do it and how we do it. Along the way, we hope you gain an even greater appreciation for why we are so incredibly excited about the future. Thank you for taking time to get to know us better.
