Demurrage/Storage

Demurrage is a fee charged for the extended use of railroad-controlled assets. This fee is intended to ensure that cars are loaded and unloaded promptly, so that they can be made available for the next shipment and so tracks remain fluid.  Storage is the fee applied on private equipment.

For details on activities that attract demurrage charges, see Section VIII (PDF) . For more information on demurrage, see A Quick Guide for Managing Demurrage (PDF) .

Diversion Services

Diversion services are provided when the party controlling a shipment asks CSX to make changes to the original or in-progress movement of a rail car. (NOTE: Sometimes it is not a change to a BOL. It can be a change to a car that is empty reverse routed.)

Switching

Services for moving equipment from one track to another within or outside of the customer's plant.

Reciprocal Switching:
The movement between two railroads, either preceding or following a road haul over one of the two railroads. See Section III (PDF) .

Industrial Switching:

  • Intra-Plant: Movement of rail cars between tracks within the customer's plant.
  • Intra-Terminal switching (lease track): Movement of equipment between a lease track and a plant at different locations within the limits of one terminal (station or industrial switching district).
  • Intra-Terminal switching: Movement of equipment between plants (other than lease track) at different locations within the limits of one terminal (station or industrial switching district).
  • Inter-Terminal: Movement of equipment between CSX and another railroad's tracks within the limits of one terminal (station or industrial switching district).

Details on industrial switching may be found in Section V (PDF) .

Intermediate Switching:
The movement required to connect the road haul between two railroads. See Section IV (PDF) .

Miscellaneous Switching:

  • Switching of diverted cars received at interchange locations on which CSX was to get a line-haul. SeeItem 6810 in Section VI (PDF) .
  • Switching service at other-than-the-normal assigned times or nonoperating hours, at specified locations. SeeItem 6825, Section VI (PDF) .
  • Turning cars when it is desired that cars be placed for loading or unloading on one particular side or end of car. See Item 6800, Section VI (PDF) .

Absorption of Switching Charges:
CSX has certain provisions under which reciprocal switching charges of other railroads will be absorbed. CSX will pay the switching railroads their published switching charge, but will assess any unabsorbed portion against the party paying the line-haul transportation charges. The absorption provisions and limitations are prescribed in the line haul price publication and the 8100 Tariff series. See Section XIII (PDF) .
