CSX Investing in New Rock Hoppers

To supplement CSX’s fleet of almost 3,000 rock cars, CSX is now investing in new self-unloading open-top hoppers, featuring rapid-discharge air-power doors.

The two pairs of longitudinal doors are hinged to the center sill, and drop parallel with it when opened. Together with 60 degree slope sheets, product clears from these cars in a matter of seconds.

These air operated doors are quicker and easier to open and close, and require a single person to operate.

The cars are rated 286K and load 114 to 114.5 tons per car.

Car length is 43 feet, 10 inches, shorter than the standard 45 feet, which helps maximize tons per train.
