Bergen Tunnel Clearance Expansion Complete, Embargo Lifted

The project to increase clearance in the Bergen and Waldo Avenue tunnels is complete. The embargo on dimensional shipments out of Port Newark has been lifted.

The clearance expansion, which began in January 2010, required a complete shutdown of the tunnel and an embargo on all dimensional shipments. During this time, the Bergen Tunnel was enlarged by cutting through solid rock, stabilizing and re-lining – all done with care not to disturb the environment above it. The renovations, which also required bridge and track modifications, were completed in September.

The higher clearance allows double-stack and dimensional shipments to move through the area more efficiently.
